The Top 4 Reasons Behind Common Siding Problems

As a homeowner, knowing the causes of problems that affect your home can help you take preventative measures, maybe even avoid potentially costly repair work. Today, we take a look at the causes behind common siding problems.

1. Moisture: Wood siding with poor waterproofing tends to absorb moisture quickly, resulting in swelling and increased susceptibility to warping. It will also make the wood fibers more hospitable towards fungi that causes dry rot. If your home has wood siding, this means you have to invest time and effort in its maintenance, which tends to be higher than most other types of siding. Consider choosing low-maintenance siding options like vinyl or fiber cement if you are planning on getting new siding.

2. Neglect: The terms “low maintenance” and “no maintenance” are used interchangeably. However, making the distinction between the two is important when it comes to siding and gutters as you could end up neglecting them if you choose the latter. Neglect can lead to all sorts of problems, including voiding your warranty coverage. The good news is low-maintenance siding really does have fewer maintenance requirements. Vinyl siding, for example, only needs to be washed occasionally using a garden hose.

3. Installation errors: One of the reasons why you should choose your contractors carefully is because a good one is less likely to commit installation errors. No matter how top-notch the siding products are, mistakes during installation can lead to problems down the road, such as moisture infiltration or boards falling off the wall. When hiring a siding contractor, make sure the warranties include coverage for installation or workmanship.

4. UV radiation: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight causes fading and brittleness over time. You can choose light-colored siding (or those with UV-resistant coatings) to help deflect some of the UV radiation and reduce its effects. Patio covers, strategically placed trees and other objects in the yard can provide shade that can block sunlight. As an extra, the shade can reduce the heat that would be otherwise absorbed by the roof and exterior walls, which may help you save on your cooling bills.
