How to Care for the Most Vulnerable Parts of Your Roof

Even the most durable, long-lasting residential roofing system has its own vulnerabilities. After years of storms and exposure to the sun, wind and everything else Mother Nature throws its way on a daily basis, any roof will begin to show signs of wear and tear. This is why it is important to understand which portions of your roof are the most susceptible to damage to prevent leaks and other roofing issues from occurring.

Valleys

Valleys are definitely weak points on your roof because it is where water converges from two or more roof faces. Be on the lookout for dips, bulges, cracks or any other area where water can pool. If you have access to your attic, make it a habit to check the valley areas for signs of leaking.

Gutters

Your gutters work hand in hand with your roof to divert water away from your home. Allowing them to get clogged will result in water damage due to water not being able to flow freely. The tendency is for water to get backed up and make its way under your roofing materials and into your home. Luckily, roofing problems associated with clogged gutters are easily avoided. Just be sure to give them a good cleaning at least twice each year.

Flashing

Flashing are thin metal strips, typically made of metal, that protect the weak areas of your roof, such as around chimneys, skylights and other edges. Over time, your flashing may become misshapen or become loose so it is important to inspect them regularly and replace when needed.
