What Are the ABCs of Roof Storm Damage?

Storms may vary in terms of severity, which is why homeowners may find it difficult to determine the extent of damage to their property. No matter the type of storm passing through your area, it can result in unfortunate roof damage. Dealing with this kind of emergency involves taking the necessary steps to speed up insurance claims and much-needed repairs.

It’s important to keep in mind the ABCs of roof storm damage.

Assess the Roof Damage

Step out of your house only when the weather is clear. While doing so, keep an eye out for hazards, such as fallen electric lines and uprooted trees. Find a good vantage point on the ground, and, using a pair of binoculars, check your roof for broken or missing shingles and other damaged components like flashings and vents. Take detailed notes and photos of the damage; these will be useful in filing a claim with your insurer.

Begin Temporary Fixes

If your roof suffered extensive damage, make sure you take immediate measures to protect the rest of your home, especially the interior. Dealing with ongoing leaks coming from your ceiling? Place buckets or garbage cans underneath them. Relocate your valuables from these leaks so they don’t get damaged by moisture. If that isn’t possible, place trash bags or any plastic covering over these items. This is also the best time to get in touch with a local contractor that can perform temporary repairs.

Call Your Insurer

In case of widespread damage throughout your area, get in touch with your insurance company and your local roofer as soon as possible. It would be great if the roofing team you hire can also help you navigate the insurance claims process. Beware of “storm chasers” or traveling roofers that go around your neighborhood and try to offer their services at low rates.

At The Badger Company, we are dedicated to making the insurance claims process as easy and efficient as possible for our customers. We can work directly with your insurer, on your behalf, to ensure that all storm damage to your home’s exterior is identified and negotiate all necessary restoration work.
