Insulation

Feeling a bit cold this winter? Has your energy bill skyrocketed? Noticing excess moisture in your home?

If you find yourself answering yes to these questions, chances are you might not have adequate attic insulation. Without the help of a professional it’s often hard to tell, but fortunately there are many warning signs that this might be an issue.

Keep reading to find out if your attic is properly insulated.

Warning Signs

Insulation is important in keeping your home energy-efficient.

When it comes to attics, there are a few tell-tale signs that yours might not be insulated properly. The following are some warning signs to look for:

  • Ice dams forming on your roof. Ice dams are blocks of ice that form on the perimeter of your roof. A sure indication that you have them are icicles forming on the gutter. A good way to remove them is by knocking them down with a rake or other yard tool.
  • A cold draft in your home. If you feel a cold breeze in your home, this could be due to inadequate attic insulation. A good way to check is by closing all door and windows. Then, light a candle and see if  the smoke is getting sucked up near light fixtures. Chances are this could mean there’s a problem.
  • Skyrocketing energy bills. Probably the most obvious sign, high energy bills due to a cold house can be a definite sign that your attic isn’t properly insulated.

What Can You Do?

Before you start to worry too much, keep in mind that improperly insulated attics are quite a common problem. In fact, many homes built pre-2000 have inadequate attic insulation and roof ventilation. There’s a very good chance your home is one of them.
