Siding Damage After a Storm: What to Do

It can be quite stressful to see your home pummeled during a storm, especially when you are left with siding damage that could cause more serious problems, such as leaks and water damage, down the road. Fortunately, there are simple actions you can take to make sure your storm-damaged siding does not get the best of you. Here are our top tips:

Inspect the Damage to Your Siding

First things first, stroll around your home, and check for signs of damage to your siding. Be on the lookout for dents, cracks, chipping paint and warping boards. Do not forget to document the damage by taking pictures as well; these will surely come in handy when you are filing a claim with your insurance company.

Address the Damage Immediately

Do not wait to address storm damage to your siding. It is important that you get your dented or cracked siding repaired before it allows moisture and other weather conditions into your home, and wreaks havoc on your belongings. Cracks can only worsen over time, and moisture can become a breeding ground for mold and mildew. If your siding is nearing its end and the damage is pretty extensive, a replacement might be the best option.

Get an Estimate From a Contractor

If your insurance agent discovers the necessity of filing a claim, the company will send an adjuster to determine how much the company should pay for the loss. But this estimate does not have to be the final word. Get an estimate from a third-party contractor for comparison purposes. Since insurance companies and contractors usually use the same software to determine the cost to restore damage to homes, their estimates should be somewhat similar.
