Important Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Siding Contractor

Consultations and interviews are an important step in hiring a good siding contractor. If you have a long list of candidates, preparing a set of questions can help you narrow it down. Read on as The Badger Company shares some of the key questions you should ask a prospective siding contractor.

“Are You Licensed and Insured?”

For most people, a license and insurance coverage is assurance of a contractor’s legitimacy, but it’s much more than that. A contractor’s license, issued by the The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services, is a guarantee that the finished work will comply with applicable building codes. Insurance coverage that includes general liability coverage and workers compensation will help protect you from liability in case of property damage or worksite injuries. A prospective contractor should be able to furnish proof of their license and insurance coverage when asked.

“Can You Provide References?”

No one else is more qualified to speak for a siding contractor’s quality than past customers. Make it a point to ask a prospective contractor for at least three references; reputable contractors should have no problems providing them. Make time to call these references and ask questions about their experience: did the contractor communicate well? Was the siding contractor able to finish the project in time and/or within budget? Were they comfortable working with the contractor?

“How Do You Handle Repairs and Maintenance?”

Working with a siding contractor is not just a one-off appointment. You’ll need someone to perform repairs and maintenance, and having just one contractor can save you a lot of time and effort down the road. 

“Can You Provide a Written Estimate?”

“Keep everything in writing” is a good rule to have in everyday life. In terms of hiring a contractor, never accept a verbal estimate. A good siding contractor should be able to provide a detailed written estimate that includes a breakdown of the labor, materials and fees involved. Many contractors furnish a digital copy of the estimate immediately after a consultation, then deliver a physical copy for you to sign. Take the time to read the written copy, compare it with the digital one and have the contractor correct mistakes before you apply your signature.
