Why You Should Remove Fallen Leaves From Your Roof

As pretty and charming as they look, autumn leaves often end up collecting on areas where you don’t want them to be, including your roof. Unfortunately, that’s just how it is during this time of the year, which is why it pays to get rid of them as soon as possible.

What Happens if You Fail to Remove Leaves From Your Roof?

If left sitting on your roof, leaves are likely to build up and incur moisture. Over time, they can ruin the roofing shingles and even send moisture down below your roof’s surface, resulting in mold growth. Not only that, but piles of wet leaves can also weaken your roof beams, compromising the integrity of the structure if not addressed immediately. They can also get as heavy as snow, creating an imbalance on your roof’s surface and causing parts of your roof to sag.

How Can You Protect Your Roof From Fallen Leaves?

Fortunately, it’s easy to prevent fallen leaves from building up on your roof. Here are a few tips you should consider to further protect your roof this fall:

  • Trim back trees. Nearby trees can boost the curb appeal of your home and provide shade during the summer. However, they can produce quite a mess during fall. If the trees near your home are easily accessible, you can trim them yourself. Taking a hands-free approach – getting a professional to do it, that is – doesn’t hurt either.
  • Clean your gutters. Gutters help deflect water away from your property. If they are clogged with leaves, however, they will be unable to function effectively. Be sure to clean them regularly to keep water runoff backing up to your roof.
  • Schedule a roof inspection. Here, your contractors will thoroughly examine your roof and look for signs of damage. If they find a buildup of dead leaves, they will remove them right away to prevent moisture damage and other roofing issues.
