A wavy or rippled roof is a problem that affects both old and new roofs, and is something that can be caused by a number of things. If your roof appears wavy, then it is definitely a cause for concern as it is not just an aesthetic issue – it could indicate more sinister problems. In today’s post, we look at the common causes of rippled roofs.
An attic that is properly ventilated allows moisture to escape through the roof vents. When you have insufficient ventilation, moisture can build up on the underside of your decking boards. Eventually, this excess moisture leeches into your shingles, causing them to buckle. Fixing your ventilation problem can solve this issue.
Strong winds can push your shingles up and give them a ruffled appearance. Luckily, this rippling can be smoothed out, provided there is no creasing or cracking of the shingles. If there is cracking or creasing present, however, your shingles will need to be replaced.
As with poor ventilation, small leaks can also cause your shingles to become wavy. Leaks can penetrate shingles where it pools on the underlayment for weeks or even months before making its way into your decking.
This occurrence is somewhat rare, but is still worth mentioning. If your roof has recently been replaced and you notice some rippling a short time after, it could mean that your roofing materials are defective. Fortunately, most roofing manufacturers offer a material warranty on shingles as well as installation work.
